PSM1 Test Passed

Hello all,

I passed PSM 1 Test Assessment in the first attempt - 86.3% just on the boarder line!

It was not an easy at all. The set of question I got had some very tricky questions- with more than one nearly correct answer. Questions were much harder than in any of the mock tests. Some do come from open assessment - but very very few. One needs to be have strong fundamentals and in-depth understanding of Concepts from Scrum Guide. Even with 4+ years of exposure with Scrum and have handled similar type of the real life situations - assessment expects the answer to be aligned with scrum guide.

- 3-4 questions around Team formation across 100 team members - Scrum Guide does not talk much about Scrum Team formation and which role is responsible. Key is - principle of "Self Organizing" and "Cross Functional".

- there were multiple choice questions around Conflict - at Team members level, between PO and Development Team - with more than 2/3 sounding correct options and some very wired options as well.

- Question on Burn Down chart + Trend line - and the inference associated with it!

My preparation over 4 week included -

Study
1. Scrum Guide - multiple readings. Only after reading and going thr the Scrum guide multiple times - one can start to understand each and every scrum element - every word has a specific meaning behind it.

2. Agile_Project_Management_With_Scrum - by Ken Schwaber

3. The-Scrum-Master-Training-Manual - By Nader K. Rad, Frank Turley (Management Plaza)

4. Articles/Blogs on Agile and Scrum - Scrum.Org forum is a good source to go through - there are some very interesting discussions and perspectives.

AgilePM(from APMG International) or Agile Practitioner from PMI

Hi All,

Sorry if I am putting this in the wrong place. I have a question regarding each one of those certifications. Can you, please advice which one you think can bring more benefit. In my personal opinion I think the PMI is better because the requirements to attend even the exam are quite high, compared to the APMG. Also it seems to me that APMG has 2 leves(foundation and seniro one) but both of them are quite short in time and with 50% passing score? I am SM for almost 2 years now and I think is next step in my professional Agile life and that's why I need some input so I can make good decision.

Thanks everybody!

Hi all,
could this data (Monitoring Sprint Progress) be understood as an artifact in some way?

I thought there was only three: Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog and the Increment.

Thank you in advance.

MPlaza Test - Multiple Scrum Teams

Hi all,
I have a doubt with a question from MPlaza mock exam.

If you are interested in this mocked tests, you shouldn't keep reading...

Question:
Nine (9) Scrum Teams are working on a single product. Which of the following is the best way of planning Sprints?

Answers:
* The Product Owner and all team members meet and create one Sprint Backlog for the project. All teams will share that Sprint Backlog for the next Sprint.
* The Product Owner meets with representatives from each team to compose the Sprint Goal and select items from the Product Backlog. Then each representative works with his/her team to create their Sprint Backlog.
* Everyone meets in the same time to check the Product Backlog and to receive information from the Product Owner. Then they coordinate dependencies, shift team members as needed, and create their Sprint Backlogs.

Which one do you think is correct?

After reading the Nexus Guide, I thought the second one was correct.

Thank you in advance.

MPlaza test - Scrum Master role

Hi all,
I have a doubt with a question from MPlaza mock exam.

If you are interested in this mocked tests, you shouldn't keep reading...

The question:
Which two of the following are true about the Scrum Master role?

The answers:
* Helps those outside the team interact with the Scrum Team
* It’s a management position
* Assigns tasks to the developers
* Is responsible for updating the burn-down chart
* Identifies what has been done prior to the Sprint Review meeting

The correct answers are:
* Helps those outside the team interact with the Scrum Team
* It’s a management position

Explanation
The Scrum Master does not manage people, but, manages the process. That’s why it’s considered a management role by Scrum.org.
The role can be part-time.
The Development Team is self-organized; it’s the developers responsibility to handle the assignments and measures the performance of the Sprints.
It is the Product Owner’s responsibility to identify what has been done before the Sprint Review.

Do you also think a Scrum Master can have a management position?

Thanks in advance.

Passed PSM I with 96%!!

Passed the PSM I today with 96%( 77/80) in the first attempt. Its a really tough test and tests your complete understanding of the Scrum which is very difficult to get just by theoretical knowledge. For for all new aspirants i will share what i did sequentially and this may help you as well though there are few very conceptual questions which demand some good hands on Scrum experience.

1. Gave open assessment to check and baseline my understanding. Scored 68%
2. Read the Scrum Guide
3. Read Scrum Master training manual from Mplaza - this is free at their site.
4. Attempted the Open assessment again - scored 93%
5. Again read the scrum guide carefully.
6. Gave Open assessment again and scored 100%
7. Repeatedly gave open assessment 3-4 times
8. Also gave PO and developer open assessment 3-4 times till i started getting consistent 100%
9. Read Scrum guide again
10. Gave the assessment on http://mlapshin.com/index.php/psm-quiz/learning-mode/. Scored 85%
11. Read Scrum guide again and carefully note all the points for the questions you have missed in point 10.
12. Gave the Mikhail Lapshin real mode exam and scored 97%.
13. Appeared for the assessment and scored 96% in the first attempt.

Few other tips:

1. Dont give too much other online assessments like scrum star and boston agile training. These might confuse you.
2. Uuse bookmarks if not sure. There will be sufficient time if you take care of all the above steps.
3. There will be about 15-20 questions from Open assessment so take it very seriously. If you answer these in a flash it really helps you.
4. Last, be confidant and 100% sure that if you have followed above steps carefully no one can stop you clearing the exam.

Good luck!!

Hi All,
I passed the PSM 1 test with 99%. Got 1 question wrong and I have no idea which one, which is quite a bummer.

My preparation included:
- Reading the Scrum Guide and understanding the concepts
- Agile Project Management with Scrum by Ken Schwaber
- This forum, on and off
- Taking the Scrum Open assessments.

I prepared for about 2 weeks, reading the Guide mostly and understanding the concepts, more than anything else.

The questions were relatively harder than the Open Assessments, although there were a few questions from the Open Assessment on there. You really do need to understand the fundamentals to do well in the test. There were also a few questions on Burn down charts, so you may want to read up and understand what they are and why they are used.

All the best to anyone else considering taking the test.

Thank you,
Chandini Paterson

Adding / Removing Sprint Backlog Items

Hi,

I'm confused about Sprint Backlog Items. Could we change the items of the Sprint Backlog after the Sprint is started and the plans are set ?

In scrum guide, they say that : "The Development Team modifies the Sprint Backlog throughout the Sprint, and the Sprint Backlog emerges during the Sprint."

But it's not clear, do we speak about adding or removing items ?

SM role for Newly formed Scrum team

Q-1 I have one query if there is new Scrum team formed and dev team has question on co-ordination side then what should sm do? He should teach PO to work with lead developer to order pb such that less overlap and dependency happens or SM should teach dev team that it is their responsibilities to co-ordinate and come up with integrated increment?

Q-2 Another query if dev team wants to skip any event like daily scrum on regular basis means reducing the frequency then does it affect sprint plan and progress on resolving impediments.

“EARN” or “BUY” a certification?

As a non-native English speaker, I have worked very hard and have studied many papers and book to deserve the PSM/PSD certificate, although I have near 30 years of experience in software development.

There is an easy way for me to attend an expensive course to get another scrum certification even if I just sleep in the corner of class room.

I really wonder why people here having years of projects’/products’ experiences choose a hard way to earn a certification instead of buying a certificate?

Thanks for any input!

PSP from Scrum.org

Hi there Scrum society.

I am planning to do the PSP assessment soon and just writing here for some tips(if anybody knows anything). I am experienced SM(more than 18 months of pure SM tasks and duties) and my company has some budget left, so I can try to take the exam. From what I read online is like a middle stone between PSM I and PSM II. Since I am not experienced enough to go directly to PSM II, I think PSP will be a good start before taking the next step. For later I am thinking SPS from scrum.org and then eventually PMI-ACP since its is a bit more expensive and I need to wait for budget after September.

So any feedback will be much appreciated.

Hello All, I have been preparing for scrum master PSM1. Went through scrum guide. I have confused many times while reading, because product owner and development team has more responsibilities than Scrum master. so my question is what exactly he does/supposed to do in day to day basis .

Passed PSM 1 with 98.8%

Just passed the PSM 1 exam with 1 mistake. Wow, I feel so lucky because I scored around 90% on the two 80-question practice assessments I did.

My way of preparing for the exam:
* work experience on a Scrum team for 8 months
* read the Scrum Guide
* buy and read the ebook "Scrum Narrative and PSM Exam Guide". (I only read this once but carefully which took me about 5 and a half hours.)
* do the quick tests in the ebook
* read the Scrum Guide for the 2nd time
* do the scrum.org open assesments until I consistently score 100%. (This isn't very hard because you keep getting the same questions. It's very useful though because some of these questions are on the actual exam literally.)
* read the Scrum Guide for the 3rd time
* do the model test in the ebook
* read the Scrum Guide for the 4th time
* do free online tests, these have pretty high quality:
- http://mlapshin.com/index.php/psm-quiz/real-mode/

During each of these steps I took notes on questions that popped up in my head about topics that weren't fully *transparent* to me. I made sure I got my own questions answered by searching online. I also *inspect*ed the test questions I got wrong and learned the correct answer, so I *adapted* my understanding. I think this is one of the best things to do to prepare for any test.

In total it took me a little over 26 hours of study time. I would probably have passed with less study time but not with this high grade.

PSM 1 - Guidance

Hello All,

I am preparing for PSM-1 and have read the Scrum guide (3 times) and given the PSM Open Assessment 3-4 times scoring 90+. But I have read/heard that the actual exam is way too different and tougher as compared to the open assessment.

So any tips/guidance on what other stuff should i read and how exactly i can consider myself fully prepared before this PSM-1 exam ?

Also, do we get just one attempt for the exam ? And for the second attempt, I again need to purchase the exam ?

Thanks in Advance !!
