Few Questions on Scrum Guide

$
0
0
1. "Formal opportunity to inspect and adapt".
As per scrum guide “Scrum prescribes four formal events for inspection and adaptation, as described in the Scrum Events section of this document”
• Sprint Planning
• Daily Scrum
• Sprint Review
• Sprint Retrospective

Scrum Guide also states: “Although improvements may be implemented at any time, the Sprint Retrospective provides a formal opportunity to focus on inspection and adaptation.”

Why scrum guide again says “Sprint Retrospective provides a formal opportunity to focus on inspection and adaptation.” ? The same should hold true for other 3 events.

2. Can the development team composition can change during a Sprint?
As per Scrum Guide: During Sprint
• No changes are made that would endanger the Sprint Goal;
• Quality goals do not decrease; and,
• Scope may be clarified and re-negotiated between the Product Owner and Development Team as more is learned.

Hence it’s allowed although it will affect the productivity or it will come under "endanger the Sprint Goal" category? I am not sure here.

3. “The Product Owner may be present during the second part of the Sprint Planning Meeting to clarify the selected Product Backlog items and to help make trade-offs”

I came across above line while taking some online assessments.

As per Scrum Guide: Scrum Guide: By the end of the Sprint Planning, the Development Team should be able to explain to the Product Owner and Scrum Master how it intends to work as a self-organizing team to accomplish the Sprint Goal and create the anticipated Increment.

So my understanding is the PO should be present throughout the Sprint planning. Please correct me.

4. “How the work is planned at the sprint Review?”
My understanding from the scrum guide is: Enough work is planned for the entire Sprint by PO and DT. But DT decomposes the planned Sprint work only for first day or less.

Work is planned by both DT and PO or DT only?

Passed PSM I on first try - My advice on how to prepare

Hello, I'm a MBA student with engineering experience. I did participate in daily scrum meetings during my first fulltime job, but I didn't know that it was SCRUM at that time. So past one week was my first time getting actually exposed to all about SCRUM. I took this exam because I have this particular fulltime job that wants SCRUM master experience PSM's standardized approach was more cost effective than CSM.

I studied for about 4-5 days. I received 90%. I personally believe that while having previous work experience in SCRUM will make the concepts more familiar, but does not guarantee passing the exam, so my advice to those new to SCRUM, don't be.

Here are the basic steps how I prepare.

1. Read official PSM scrum guide.
-Not many pages, but very concise and a good, easy read. I read it whenever I had a chance (while on the subway or while I'm at home). Becoming familiar with keywords and SCRUM framework are the keys for this step.

Feedback: Doing #1 alone will not let you pass the exam at all as the exam will not, almost all the cases, just ask you to define a keyword straight from the guide.

2. Try PSM I open assessment every single time whenever I had time and bored.
-At first, I think I received about 50-60%. I think I took the exam whenever I had time (at least 40-50 times) and I scored basically 100% every single time afterwards. Continue practicing it to the level where you can answer everything in 5 minutes and is indeed possible as the keywords and Q&As will be engraved in your head.

3. Try PSPO I Open assessment
-I couldn't try the Developer open as it was beyond the scope of PSM I exam (and I didn't have any idea what the keywords in Developer exam talked about), but PSPO I was actually very useful allowing me to understand about SCRUM more in depth. I would say that PSPO I is actually more closer to what the exam difficulty will be at.

4. Try sample exams and quizzes on Google.
-Many nice people in this forum already shared a lot of useful websites (especially free ones for price-sensitive people such as students like me), but there are a lot of resources on Google, so I strongly advise you to look it up.
There are also a lot of free videos available on Youtube and Google. I suggest trying to see SCRUM examples or real-life scenarios to help you visualize the framework.

5. Study optional practices such as burndown chart
-While not included in SCRUM guide as it is a framework, there are certain tools and concepts you optionally can apply to facilitate SCRUM process and a burndown chart is one of them.

Steps #1-5 are what I did for 3-4 days (while 100%ing PSM I open assessment and PSPO I open assessment as if breathing air whenever I have time). My last advice is when you read a question, think about what the words really mean in questions and compare the words to definitions shown in the SCRUM guide. There will be situations where A and B both sound the same, but if you think carefully, you start to see the difference.

Good luck, everyone.

PSM versus CSM

Evening all, I am brand spanking new to Scrum.org but after doing some poking around and what not believe this is where I want/need to be. I apologize if this question has been asked but I can't seem to find it so am throwing it out there.

Can anyone give me some insight as to the difference between CMS vs PSM. How they are perceived, are they equal? One better? Pros/Cons?

I am finding it more important to have some kind of "backing" to support that I know what I know and was pleased to find I could take the test without having to sit through the two day CSM training (plus I don't have that kind of cash laying around at the moment).

Is the PSM well received? Recognized? It seems to be more real world - in practice and less proof of training, but that could just be wishful thinking on my part.

Any information would be greatly appreciated and helpful.

Thanks
Adam

Scrum Guide as a mind map

Hi All,

I have made a mind map of the Scrum Guide. You can access it from my blog: http://www.mansell.nl/2015/09/the-scrum-guide-for-dyslexics.html or directly at http://bit.ly/the_scrum_guide. I made it to help with learning for PSM I candidates who are dyslexic and others who are more visual and spatial. Please let me know if you find it helpful or have comments and changes. The content is simply the Scrum Guide.

Scrum Theory

Hi All,

Can anyone help me in understanding the below points with an example or an scenario.

What do you mean by -

1. Scrum makes clear the relative efficacy of your product management and development practices so that you can improve.

2. Transparency requires those aspects be defined by a common standard so observers share a common understanding of what is been seen.

3. Inspections are most beneficial when diligently performed by skilled inspectors at the point of work.

4. If an inspector determines that one or more aspects of a process deviate outside acceptable limits, and that the resulting product will be unacceptable, the process or the material being processed must be adjusted.

Scrum Rules

Hello Everyone I am a new bee here. I don't know from where to start so I have posted here. Can any one tell me some of the important rules of using this forum?

A feedback system to increase quality of professional assessments

$
0
0
One of Forum Rules of Engagement is “No posting Scrum.org assessment questions and answers on the Scrum.org forums.”

Is it possible to implement a feedback system in professional assessments system?

Just like the “Bookmark” function, test taker can check a “Comment” check box if the question is ambiguous or unclear to her/him.

When the test is done, give 5 or 10 minutes to test taker for adding comments or feedback to each checked questions.

The professional assessments are not merely tests of knowledge, but assessments of understanding. But, sometimes, coming up with good questions can be harder than coming up with good answers. A feedback system always increase transparence and quality.

Scaled scrum Questions

Hello, I have below questions on Nexus guide.

1. If we need 100+ developer to work on a Product. Can it be done through scrum?

As per nexus guide: Nexus is a framework consisting of roles, events, artifacts, and techniques that bind and weave together the work of approximately three to nine Scrum Teams working on a single Product Backlog to build an Integrated Increment that meets a goal.

2. Is it recommended that all scrum teams working on the same product to have common “Sprint Length". Otherwise it may create problem for sync up.

3. Can I have some example on the “priority must be given to the work for the Nexus Integration Team Membership in the Nexus Integration Team takes precedence over individual Scrum Team membership."

As per nexus guide: Members of the Nexus Integration Team may also work on the Scrum Teams in that Nexus, as appropriate and necessary. If this is the case, priority must be given to the work for the Nexus Integration Team. Membership in the Nexus Integration Team takes precedence over individual Scrum Team membership. This preference helps ensure that the work to resolve issues that affect many teams has priority

Thanks,
Soumya

Lay-out assessment differs from open assessments

During the assessment of Professional SCRUM Product Owner I I was surprised by seeing a different lay-out and even different functionality of the assessment comparing with the open assessments. Is it possible to make them equal to each other? Some of my colleagues used the "new" bookmark a question functionality and meet some confusing situations.

Hello,

My name is Karin and I have a bit of a problem understanding some of the questions in the Open:
Could you please help me, I ll add one question first.

Four new Scrum Teams have been created to build one product. A few of the developers on one of the Development Teams ask the Scrum Master how their Sprint work is going to remain aligned. What should the Scrum Master do?

1.Collect the Sprint tasks from the teams at the end of their Sprint Planning and merge that into a consolidated plan for the entire Sprint.

2.Teach them that it is their responsibility to work with the other teams to create an integrated Increment.

3. Visit every team each day to inspect that their Sprint Backlogs are aligned.

4. Teach the Product Owner to work with the lead developers on ordering Product Backlog in a way to avoid too much technical and development overlap during a Sprint.

Best regards Karin

How do I begin?

Hi to all !
I read a lot on this forum and lot information are very helpful!

I have a question :

I was involved in project management in France but not as a project manager. I would like to upgrade and have a better position.

Now i live in Netherlands and I'm really interested in scrum mindset.

I already begin open assessments (scrum open + product owner open) and got 100% a couple of times

But i have doubts...I wonder if i have to begin with PSM or PSPO training. It looks like all is needed but all is not affordable for me.

I plan to attempt to a training course but is there an order in the learning steps (first PSM and PSPO in second) or it does no matter?

(I'm a beginner, never work with scrum or agile and I'm not english native).

Thanks for your advice

Its really a great moment to say that I earned my PSPO1 Certification.:)
I am very grateful to this community which helped me to understand many questions, I purely did a self study almost with lot of discontinuity.
The resources in this thread helped a lot. Another thing I did was just browsed through the entire forum archives for questions that previous users have asked. This also helped me a lot!
Thanks to the entire team out here for the valuable directions and knowledge enhancement tips.
My Learning and Experience Suggestions:
1. Know the Official Scrum Guide in and out. Study it as many times as possible.
2. On Scrum.org, take Scrum Open assessments, until you consistently hit 100%.
3. I took practice exam from http://www.agileprojectmanagementtraining.com/agile-exam-resources/
which helped me to be in rhythm and be more confident.
4. Actual job experience is also matters.
I felt I was thoroughly prepared after doing the things I listed above, and I passed my first time.

Nexus knowledge needed for PSM2?

$

Hi,

I am preparing for the PSM2 assessment, and from my previous attempt (2012) I remember quite some questions about Scrum with more than one team. I had no experience on that, then, and no clue that I could be getting questions like that.

I am three years wiser now, and going for it again. But the Scrum with more than one team questions, and with the new Nexus framework out, I am wondering if Nexus has made its way into the PSM2 assessment.

Can someone tell this to me?
Thanks.

Got my PSM 1, couple of tips

Hi,

Very pleased. I got the PSM 1 yesterday. Many thanks to people in the forum for providing pointers and tips.

The main things I found that helped me (over and above current experience as scrum master and the agile teams I've worked in) were:

1. Doing all of the open exams on the Scrum.org site and being sure I could get and understand 100% on each. Some questions especially on PO and Developer had a bearing on the SM exam

2. Used Mikhail Lapshin's excellent sample tests on http://mlapshin.com/index.php/psm-quiz/

3. Read the SCRUM guide end to end a couple of times and referred to it while doing the sample tests in learning mode

4. Read SCRUM Mastery and online resources about coaching agile teams. Read the Scrum Study SBOK

Even with that some of the questions in the exam I had to refer to what had been done or I would to in real scenarios and think quite hard. The exam did actually make me think quite hard

Regards,

Andrew
