First, much thanks to a great teacher coach, MIchael McCullough as I passed the PSM I the first ime with a 95% - great job of teaching Michael!

Second, for those on this forum that have taken the PSM II, which looks significantly more demanding, how long have you waited before taking that on?

SIncerely appreciate any input/guidance.

Andre

Question ( who is responsible , DoD)?

$

who is responsible to define and maintain the DoD (Definition of Done) ?

A) Dev. Team
B) Dev Team + Product Owner
C) Scrum Team

I think the option C) is the best answer

but I am not sure, the Option B) is also a good one, because normally Scrum Master encourages / facilitates, especially in rertrospective meetings, the others to review the DoD to see if it could be improved. So far as I know SM shouldn't participate actively on defining of DoD, otherweis this impacts the " self-organizing" of team.

what about Option A), I know that PO cares about DoD and must be involved , and his/her agreement about DoD is essential, he/she is the one that takes the responsibilty for the product and its quality and also decides at the end of sprint based on DoD if the feature is done or must go back to Product backlog, but does he actively participate on defining and maintaing of DoD?

Thanks
Mehdi

PSPO I Assessment

Hi,

I did the PSPO I assessment today and marginally failed it.

Two questions:

a) There was a question about Burndown charts "if it is part of scrum or necessary in scrum". The instructor in my training said, that it is not necessary. What is the right answer?

b) When die DT selected to many Product Backlog Items to do in one sprint and wants to discuss the situation. Who has to be in the meeting?

Here my feedback on the assessment:

I am a bit irritated about the feedback after the assessment. I did the PSM and the PSPO training, I reviewed the training material and the scrum guide and I read the forum questions. Without a little bit more detailed feedback (e.g. which field was ok. which not) I don't now, where I have to deepen my knowledge about scrum.

That means, I can't inspect and adapt my process due to a lack of transparency. I is a shame these core elements of the scrum framework doesn't fit with the assessment.

At the moment I am not sure if it makes any sense to do the assessment for another $100 again.

Just Passed the PSM1 Exam, Scored 94%

Wow, what a ride to taking this thing. I'm going to post in the other forum my thoughts on the use of SCRUM in software development, but for this post, I'm going to provide, like others have, some insight that may be useful in terms of studying for and passing the PSM1 Exam.

1. Ignore the advice on this forum to read other SCRUM books and manuals. For instance, like the Scrum Book of Knowledge that's over 300 pages. It's not necessary and can actually be a detriment because information in other books and manuals by third parties (parties other than Scrum.org/the Scrum Guide) can be wrong and just plain confusing. Besides, it's overkill anyway and thus a waste of time unless you have the time to spend on navigating all of that information and verifying it.
2. What did I use to study? a) The official Scrum Guide from Scrum.org. b) The Open Assessment Tests on Scrum.org: PSM Open Assessment, the Developer Open Assessment, the Product Owner Open Assessment, and the Nexus Open Assessment. c) The practice tests on http://mlapshin.com. d) The Nexus Guide from Scrum.org. e) My own practical experience using Scrum for software development and knowledge of it otherwise.
3. I read the Scrum Guide 3 times. I read the Nexus Guide once.
4. I took all of the Open Assessments mentioned several times until I was consistently scoring 100%. On the Nexus, there was a few times where I might get one question wrong and just didn't bother taking that test too many times. I probably took the Scrum Open Assessment at least 10 times: this was my main focus. A few new questions will randomly appear different times you take the test so doing the test several times helps you memorize and get exposed to the other questions.
5. From the Scrum Guide, I created 140 questions using Flashcard software for Mac called Flashcard Hero. By creating these questions, it caused me to think more deeply about what I was reading. I then went through the Flash Cards once to memorize them as best as I could.

I have several years experience practicing as a software development leader and thought I was practicing Scrum. After getting certified, I now realize that I wasn't completely practicing Scrum. Anyway, if a person has no experience in software development I could see this certification being that much harder because of how abstract the concepts really are.

For me, I spent 3 days solid all day studying and cramming for this. That 3 days prepared me for today, and I passed with 94%. I can see there's no end of people offering training and even big Universities offering courses for around $1200. If you feel shaky with the concepts and with software development perhaps one of these courses will help. However, for me, it would be a waste of money and time. The Scrum Guide and the Internet is all I needed. But again, I have practical experience applying Scrum in software development.

I'm probably going to put up a site with 150 questions as a practice test for PSM 1 in the near future.

I can say that a few of the questions on the exam were a bit tricky, and it's associated with multiple Scrum Teams and a few other things. I found that that wasn't really clear and completely covered in the Scrum Guide, so ensure you do get some exposure to Nexus and also to the Product Owner Open Assessments.

But again, do not focus too much on this other stuff. Spend most of your time just working with the Scrum Guide. I've read through many threads on this forum and it's enough to make my head spin. Some of you are really overdoing it and I can only imagine what it would be like to work with you on software development projects. There's a law of diminishing returns folks...

On that note, just keep it simple, focus on the Scrum Guide, study it hard, take the Open Assessments and the practice tests at http://mlapshin.com and you should be just fine. Any questions please let me know.

Passed PSM1 - BUT dissapointed at test platform

Hi Guys,

I am totally new to scrum.org and needed to write this exam for the job I currently have. I put in about 2 days study time ( 6 weeks before the test) and about 2 hours just before writing. Passed with 87.5% and disappointed due to the speed of the test platform.

YES, this COULD have been because of my internet connection, however, I did a few of the open assessments on scrum.org and it took me on average under 8 minutes for these. So my internet speed seemed fine.

However, when I bought and wrote the actual exam, the test platform was seriously slow. I was averaging 2 minutes per question for the first 5-10 questions (and answered them in 20 seconds on average). I then decided to speed up and answer without thinking and going with first answer on instinct (As I was not certain if scrum.org would give me another password based on the speed issue). I could not even go back to my bookmarked questions (only 5 of them) before the time expired.

I am happy to have passed, just disappointed as I believe I could have done much better. Did any of you experience a similar issue? Do scrum.org allow a new password with these issues?

Just to re-iterate, I am happy to have passed on my first attempt, just disappointed that I could have done much better.

Thanks
Ash

PSM 1 in India

Hi,
I am new to Scrum.org and am unsure if this is the right forum for my question. If not, please let me know.
I am interested in taking up the PSM1 assessment. However, when I try to buy it, I am not able to see an option to pay in Indian Rupees. I am based out of India and I only get US Cards as options. I do not have a PayPal $ based account. Please suggest on how I can pay in Rupees for this Assessment.

Thanks,
Priya Vignesh

PSP exam Cleared

Dear All,

After 2 attempts , I finally have cleared PSP exam with 90% score . This exam is too tricky and the questions are having multiple options to be selected. This requires extreme understanding of Scrum Guide, Enterprise Guide and Gunther's Scrum Pocket guide.

Apart from that , there are coaching and facilitation questions which is advacnved level.

So if any of you attempting them pls make sure you visit Simon's blog and cover all subject areas without whcih we pay expensive cost.

One question I found too tricky was

Your co Scrum Master Malia is meeting you at the pantry area and her team is having 8 members working . Now management decided to add 3/more team members to it. Malia already advised PO that adding team members will create synch up and collaboration difficult , so she suggested split the team to two teams. However the Management didn't understand.

Now she is asking if she is right and as a Scrum Master what would be the good advise. options for these are too tricky as Scrum Master is expected to coach and advise level is something going like solving the problem.
A) Tell Maria her decision is right and ask her to be persistent and management ll understand realising the value of splitting

B) Go with the 11 team members as such , Then management will realise ....

C) another vague option like Add members let Dev team figure out how to coordinate with each other

I have e chosen ask her to be persistent option..Not sure. This is tricky becoz Scrum Master are expected to coach PO and Organisation but it may go like solving a problem here at the same time , Real coach will let Scrum team fail and adapt fast so they learn.

Option C also seems to be OK becoz self organising teams shud figure out but as per Scrum Guide only 3-9 members can be in a Scrum team.

So whether to see this question from coach perspective or letting the team self organise is a tricky one. I have seen this question from Scrum .Master perspective only.

Very happy to score 90. I recommend PSM1 candidates to read Scrum Guide many times and test your knowledge with Open Assessment until you score 100%.

Hi everyone,

Unlike the Scrum Open or Developer Open assessments, the Practitioner Open Assessment doesn't provide any feedback on which questions you didn't answer correctly. Is there a reason behind this? Am I allowed to post questions here that I'm not sure about? Thanks!

Cleared PSM 1 with 98% in 1st Attempt - Simple Tips

I cleared PSM1 with 98% in the first attempt.Just followed the below

1. Read Scrum Guide thoroughly.
2. Read Scrum Narrative and PSM Exam Guide by Mohammed Musthafa Soukath Ali
(https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/592973)
3. Took open Assesments multiple times.

I only used 2 books - Scrum Guide and PSM EXam Guide book along with Open Assessment. Scrum Guide and Open Assesments are known to all. But i found Scrum Narrative and PSM Exam Guide very useful for the preparation. The eBook for PSM Exam explains the scrum principles and rules in the question - answer way which makes you to think and understand clearly. Scrum guide is explained in more detailed way without any deviation (clearly differentiated by tagging 'DE TOUR'). It provides lot of questions. around 200 questions including a model assessment which will give you a good practice for the real exam

Scrum on, All the best :-)

PSM Practices and Techniques

$

Hello everyone,

the Scrum guide mentions several practices/techniques that the Scrum master could suggest/propose to the Product Owner and to the Development Team, in his/her role of coach of the Scrum Team.

Would anyone suggest a reference for these practices in preparation for the PSM I? The topic areas are very broad and I do not see (perhaps my fault) anything that specifically addresses this point? Perhaps is it not covered in the PSM I test but only in the PSM II?

Thanks,

Dan

PSM vs PSPO: which one?

$

Hello everybody,

I would like to take a Scrum certification and it is not clear to me what is the actual industry value difference between the PSM and the PSPO - starting also from the level 1.

To me, it is clear the respective roles of the Scrum Master and of the Product Owner, but I wonder how different as these two certifications? Which perceived different value has the industry (in Europe/Germany, particularly)? I.e., if I have PSM I, would it be clear that I am also given a Product Owner role? And for the second level?

What is the actual overlapping between these certifications?

Thanks in advance!

Dan

Hi

I passed the PSM1 certification yesterday with 95% at the first attempt. It was long pending from my end.
Apart from reading the scrum guide, scrum primer and consistently scoring 100% in Scrum Open, PO open and Developer open I found the following very helpful to validate my knowledge of scrum
